Ethnomedicine plays a vital role in interiors of North Eastern India till date for basic medicinal needs of the Ethnic Communities of the region. During a preliminary survey, we found a very interesting claim about anthelmintic potential of olive leaves by a local traditional practitioner practicing in the interiors of Brahmaputra Valley region. This research was conducted to evaluate the possible antihelmintic activity of leaf of Olea europea using Indian adult earth worm (Pheretima posthuma) as a test worm. Various concentration (5%, 2.5%, 1%) were in-vitro tested using hydroalcoholic extract and chloroform extract was tested in 0.1% and 0.25% concentrations and the results were involved in terms of time for paralysis (P) and time for death (D). It showed shortest time for paralysis in 5% concentration of Hydroalcoholic extract, while the time for paralysis and death increased in 2.5% and 1% respectively as compared to standard drug Albendazole. The present study indicated that the leaf of Olea europea has a significant anthelmintic potential and can be further explored due to its easy availability and cost factor.
